JUNKITECTURE
Imaginative and creative challenges, developed for families, teachers and students to start thinking like an architect and explore both design and engineering.
In collaboration with HomeGrown Plus, we developed step by step creative 3D project guides that could be accessed from home with minimal materials and space due to COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in place at the time of launch.
Each challenge encourages families to let their imaginations’ run wild! The ‘London Junk Skyline’ outlines how to recreate your favourite building out of the contents of your recycling bin. The ‘Dream Room’ challenge sets out how to create an aspirational space for your favourite character (whether that’s from a book or cartoon or even a toy!) using spare materials. The ‘Around The World’ challenge inspires participants to consider ‘If you could travel anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?’ and create their favourite building, sculpture or landmark.
Incorporated into each challenge is a warmup exercise, tips and techniques for model making and photography, as well as an introduction to key terminology such as scale, structure and material. Entries were judged by architects from practices including Allford Hall Monaghan Morris, Adjaye Associates and Rogers Stirk Harbour and Partners.
Winning entries were collaged into a London ‘Junk’ Skyline, a Dream House for many favourite characters to live together and a world map!
The resources for each challenge can be found below. The competition may be over, but we’d love to see your creative take on the challenges!
