We are an award winning not-for-profit education and design agency, female founded in 2018. Our incredible, dynamic team utilise art, architecture, design, education and research expertise. At the heart of our ethos is a shared desire for achieving social good.

Urban Learners founding director Venetia Wolfenden, is an architect and educator with a masters degree in Design Education. Her multidisciplinary expertise encompasses design, engagement and research skills with a proven track record of devising inclusive and creative processes. Venetia’s Participatory Action Research MA thesis (Involving Children in Participatory Design for their immediate built environment) underpins Urban Learners’ ethos and practice.

Director Andy Costa is a practicing architect, civic design advocate and educator with strategic design expertise and leadership skills. Andy has extensive knowledge of art and architecture both in the UK and internationally, is a national awards juror and lecturer for architecture, interior architecture and urban landscape students at Ravensbourne University. Andy has previously also been chair of trustees for an architectural charity, and advocates for a fairer and more inclusive society.

Edwin Heathcote, the world renowned architectural critic and writer for the Financial Times, director of Reading Design and author.

Demetra Lindsay, an experienced architect and conservation specialist. Demetra also delivers several annual workshop activities for Urban Learners.

Derek Yates, an author, graphic design expert and artist. Derek is Associate Professor and head of Creative Lab at Ravensbourne University which works alongside the creative industry.
